Getting Started

What makes Purple Dragon ATL different from other martial arts schools in Conyers?

We are a traditional Don Jitsu Ryu Dojo rooted in a lineage that began in 1970 under Grandmaster Professor Don Jacob. That means a complete, multi-weapon curriculum, belt ranks that are earned rather than bought, and a calm, structured environment built for long-term growth — not a recreational drop-in program. Every student begins with a Private Assessment so we can place them correctly from day one.

Why do you begin with a $50 Private Assessment instead of a free trial?

A free class only tells you whether you enjoyed it. A Private Assessment tells us where a student belongs, what their goals are, and whether we are the right Dojo for your family. It is a 30-minute, one-on-one evaluation with a qualified instructor. The $50 fee is credited in full toward your Warrior Starter Bundle when you enroll within 7 days.

How do we get started?

Book your Private Assessment online. You will meet one-on-one with an instructor, we will evaluate readiness and goals, and we will recommend the right program and training frequency. If you enroll within 7 days, your assessment fee is credited toward enrollment. It is a calm, no-pressure first step.

For Youth & Families

What age can children start at Purple Dragon ATL?

Our Tiny Tots program welcomes children starting at age 5, and our Young Warriors program serves ages 7-12. Both are structured to meet children exactly where they are developmentally.

Will martial arts help my child’s confidence?

Yes — because the confidence is earned, not handed out. Every skill mastered and every belt tested for is real evidence to a child that they can set a goal and reach it. Over time, that self-belief tends to show up well beyond the Dojo, at school and at home.

Can training help a child who is being bullied?

Our focus is on the qualities that make bullying less likely to take hold: calm confidence, self-control, and the ability to stand tall and set boundaries. We teach discipline and non-violent conflict resolution first, with real physical skill as a foundation beneath it. Many parents tell us the change they notice most is in how their child carries themselves.

My child struggles to focus. Is this a good fit?

Often, yes. The structure of a traditional class — clear expectations, short focused drills, and consistent routine — gives active or distractible children a productive place to channel their energy. We meet each child where they are and build attention gradually. Your Private Assessment is the best way for us to understand your child’s needs.

Do parents watch class?

Yes. We welcome parents to observe. Seeing the structure, the instruction, and your child’s progress is part of the partnership between the family and the Dojo.

Teens & Adults

Do you offer training for teens and adults?

We do. Our Teen program (ages 13-17) channels energy into discipline, resilience, and real-world confidence during formative years. Our Adult program (18+) is purposeful training — genuine self-defense, functional fitness, and mental clarity — not cardio entertainment. Both begin with a Private Assessment.

Is training safe for complete beginners?

Yes. Instructors teach age- and level-appropriate technique in a controlled environment, and proper form and control always come before any contact. Because we place every student through an assessment, beginners start exactly where they should — never thrown in over their heads.

Training & Belt Ranks

How often should we train to see real progress?

We recommend at least two to three sessions per week for consistent progress. More frequent training deepens focus, discipline, and skill retention — which is why many students choose higher-frequency or Unlimited paths. Progress in martial arts is measured over months and years, and consistency matters most. Your instructor will recommend the right starting frequency during the assessment.

What is Don Jitsu Ryu, and why does the system matter?

Don Jitsu Ryu is the traditional system at the heart of Purple Dragon, founded in 1970 by Grandmaster Professor Don Jacob. It is a complete, multi-weapon curriculum with a defined path of progression — a system to grow through, not a rotating sampler of trends. Training within a real system is what turns effort into lasting skill.

How does the belt ranking system work?

Students progress through colored belt ranks based on skill, knowledge, and character. Belts are earned, never paid for. Gradings are overseen by Purple Dragon International, with examinations conducted by Grandmaster Professor Don Jacob — so a rank earned here carries a real, verifiable standard behind it.

Do you teach real self-defense?

Yes. Don Jitsu Ryu blends striking with grappling and control, taught as practical, principle-based self-defense rather than sport point-scoring. Just as important, we teach the judgment to avoid and de-escalate conflict — skill with the discipline to match it.

Still deciding?

That is exactly what the Private Assessment is for. Bring your questions — we will answer them in person, evaluate fit honestly, and point you the right way whether or not you enroll.
