A LEGACY OF DISCIPLINE & HONOR

Est. 1970 • Trinidad & Tobago

Purple Dragon International was founded over five decades ago on the principle that martial arts is not merely physical training—it is a path of personal transformation, rooted in respect, discipline, and the pursuit of excellence.

The Purple Dragon Story

In 1969, a sixteen-year-old martial artist named Don Jacob opened a small training hall in the Belmont neighborhood of Port of Spain, Trinidad. The locals called it “Hell Yard”—a nickname earned through the intensity and seriousness of the training that took place there.

By 1970, the school received its official name: Purple Dragon International. What began as a single dojo in the Caribbean has grown into a global organization spanning Trinidad & Tobago, the Cayman Islands, Grenada, Dominica, Antigua, the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia.

This was no small feat. At the time, non-Oriental practitioners were rarely permitted to establish new martial arts systems—especially in the Third World. But Grandmaster Professor Jacob persisted, guided by a singular vision: to create a system that combined the discipline of traditional martial arts with practical self-defense and mental fortitude.

That vision became Don Jitsu Ryu.

Grandmaster Professor Don Jacob

Born in San Fernando, Trinidad on October 16, 1954, Grandmaster Professor Anthony Don Jacob began his martial arts journey at nine years old under the guidance of Sensei Clyde Thomas. After earning his black belt in judo, he traveled to New York to train with the legendary Grandmaster Moses Powell in Jiu-Jitsu.

Over the decades that followed, he studied and mastered multiple disciplines—including traditional karate under Master Tusui Yoshitaka and small-circle jujitsu under Professor Wally Jay. These influences shaped the technical foundation of Don Jitsu Ryu.

His credentials speak for themselves:

He has trained over 40,000 students worldwide and authored several foundational texts including High Impact Jiu-Jitsu, The Fighting Man’s Bible, and Don Jitsu Ryu Flesh & Bone: The Soul of a Don Jitsu Ryu Black Belt Warrior.

Inducted into the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame (Akron, Ohio, 1991) and the World Head of Family Sokeship Council Hall of Fame (San Antonio, Texas, 2008)

Recipient of the Hummingbird Gold Medal — one of Trinidad & Tobago’s highest national honors, presented by the President of the Republic in 2010. He is the first and only martial artist in the country to receive this award, and is a member of The Distinguished Society of Trinidad and Tobago.

Featured on ABC’s Wide World of Sports and Trans World Sports (UK) — with appearances across international television, magazine covers (including the cover of British magazine Oriental Arts – Karate, August 1980), and live performances earning over 200 standing ovations at venues including Madison Square Garden.

Traveled to over 70 countries across every continent except Antarctica — conducting teaching seminars and demonstrations globally, including in Japan, China, Africa, London, and the Middle East.
