BELT GRADING β€” MARCH 27–29, 2026

Grandmaster Professor Don Jacob will be present to officiate our upcoming Grading, taking place Friday, March 27th through Sunday, March 29th, 2026.

Belt Grading is a formal assessment of each student’s skill, discipline, and readiness to advance in Don Jitsu Ryu.

The $175 grading fee is for a single grading assessment. It is not a payment for a belt. Belts are earned through performance and preparation, and they are not automatically awarded. Not every student will be promoted.

Eligibility is determined by attendance, technical development, and instructor approval. Students who are not ready will continue training at their current level until they meet the standard.

This process protects the value of each rank and ensures that every promotion reflects real progress.

WHAT THE GRADING FEE COVERS

β€’ Formal evaluation of student performance

β€’ Instructor assessment and review

β€’ Rank record updates and administrative processing

β€’ Belt and certification only if promotion is earned

WHY THIS MATTERS

Students learn to earn advancement through discipline, preparation, and accountability.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO NOW

β€’ Confirm eligibility when you receive the grading notice

β€’ Submit the $175 grading fee by Saturday, March 21st, 2026

β€’ Late registrations will not be accepted. No exceptions.

Open Schedule / Unlimited Classes: To support our eligible grading students, we are opening up all classes to facilitate extra training. Take full advantage of this window. Spots are limited.

SEMINAR WITH GRANDMASTER PROFESSOR DON JACOB

This seminar is dedicated training time with Grandmaster Professor Don Jacob, the source of our system.

The $100 seminar fee is per student and provides focused, hands-on instruction directly from him in the principles and techniques of Don Jitsu Ryu.

This is not a regular class and not a demonstration. It is a rare opportunity for students to train under the founder and experience the system at a higher level.

Students will be challenged, corrected, and exposed to the standard expected at the highest levels of training.

Mandatory participation for Green Belts and higher.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Students gain direct exposure to the source of the art and develop a deeper understanding of their training.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO NOW

β€’ Submit the $100 seminar fee by Saturday, March 21st, 2026

β€’ Arrive early and prepared for focused training

β€’ Registration closes March 21st. Late registrations may not be accepted.

STUDENT PROGRESS REPORTS

Progress reports from the February 14th class are being sent out today, March 3rd. As this was our first round of progress reports, the feedback took longer than anticipated. We appreciate your patience and are committed to improving β€” our goal is to deliver reports much closer to the class date moving forward.

The next round of progress reports will follow the March 14th class, and we intend for that feedback to be delivered almost instantly.

WHY THIS MATTERS

The March 14th progress report directly determines who will be invited to grade on March 27th–29th. This is the final input used to solidify Grading candidate selection.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO NOW

β€’ Review the progress report when it arrives

β€’ Follow any recommendations from the instructors

β€’ Prioritize attendance through March 14th β€” this class determines grading eligibility

SMALL GROUP TRAINING (SGT)

Our Small Group Training program is a focused, personalized training experience designed to accelerate development beyond the regular class setting.

SGT is a supplement to regular classes β€” not a replacement. Students must continue attending their scheduled group classes. SGT provides additional, focused training on top of the existing class schedule.

Sessions are held in groups of 4–6 students, meeting twice per week in 30–45 minute sessions. The focus is on personalized skill development, advanced technique refinement, competition preparation, and building the confidence needed to progress through the belt system faster. Spots are limited per group to ensure personalized attention.

Price: $50/month add-on β€” month-to-month, no contract

Who It’s For: Any enrolled student looking to deepen their training β€” especially students aged 4–14 preparing for grading or competition

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO NOW

β€’ Speak with Shihan Hayden during any class to enroll

β€’ Or contact us at the Dojo to reserve a spot

β€’ Spots are limited per group

REFERRAL PROGRAM

Personal referrals are the most powerful way our Dojo family grows. When you share Purple Dragon ATL with someone you trust, you are giving them access to a system that builds discipline, confidence, and character.

HOW IT WORKS

Pick up a referral postcard from the Dojo. Write your name and your friend’s name on the back. Your friend brings the postcard to the Dojo to book a Sponsored Assessment β€” a personal introduction to our system. When your referral enrolls for at least a 6-month agreement, you receive a $50 tuition credit as our thank you. There is no limit to the number of families you can refer.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO NOW

β€’ Pick up a referral postcard at the Dojo

β€’ Share it with a family who would benefit from our training

β€’ No limit on referrals β€” each enrolled referral earns you $50

POPCORN FUNDRAISER β€” 4 INITIATIVES, 1 MISSION

We are launching a Double Good Popcorn Fundraiser to support four critical initiatives that will shape the future of Purple Dragon ATL.

PILGRIMAGE TO TRINIDAD β€” JUNE 25 – JULY 2, 2026 (TENTATIVELY)

The Pilgrimage to Trinidad is a structured training immersion at the birthplace of Don Jitsu Ryu. This is not a vacation. It is a return to the root of our lineage, standards, and culture.

Participants will experience intensive training at multiple Trinidad Dojos, participation or observation in official events, exposure to senior instructors and Grandmaster guidance, and cultural immersion connected to the roots of the system.

Students train under different instructors across several Dojos β€” including Arima, Belmont, Valencia, and World Headquarters β€” building adaptability, technical precision, and mental toughness.

What to Expect: Consecutive days of structured training sessions, visits to historic training locations and the Purple Temple site, cultural experiences, and shared meals with the global Don Jitsu Ryu community.

Who Should Go: Serious practitioners, future Black Belt candidates, and families who want to experience the full depth of our system firsthand.

SHERMAN CHESTNUT

THE ROAD TO BLACK BELT

From white belt to black belt β€” Sherman’s journey through Purple Dragon is a testament to discipline, perseverance, and the transformative power of Don Jitsu Ryu.

What sparked your interest in martial arts?

“I am the only boy of 5 siblings. My mom wanted to get me away from my sisters and there was a karate school next to where me and my dad got our hair cut. At that dojo I progressed to a Green belt, but didn’t really feel challenged or connected.”

What brought you to Purple Dragon?

“One day driving by the shopping center, I saw the sign and I asked my dad if we could go check it out. We told my mom about it and I took the trial class and wanted to try this new Dojo. That was November 2020.”

What has made you stay the course?

“Wanting to finish something I started and the goal of getting my Black Belt.”

How do you balance martial arts with school and other activities?

“With my mom’s help. I made sure that I made time for karate because this was a priority. I sometimes had to make choices, but I didn’t let them interfere; especially around grading.”

Tell us about the preparation for black belt grading.

“Biggest preparation came from running. I run long distance in track, so this helped me with karate and track. Shihan gave me homework and my parents made sure I got it done. Mentally I had to keep telling myself that I would be a Purple Dragon Black Belt. Coming to the Saturday Black Belt Trainings really helped prepare me as well.”

How did you remain motivated through the grading experience?

“I remained motivated from me trying to prove myself worthy of getting a jet-black belt. I would look and see how Shihan Paul was working so hard, and it inspired me to keep going β€” to also know all my friends at Purple Dragon Atlanta were cheering for me.”

What advice would you give to someone thinking about enrolling?

“Give it your all. When it comes to black belt grading or any other grading you need to give it your all to succeed. Always give 110%.”

What advice for someone wanting to restart after a pause?

“Pauses are excuses to get out but now pauses are no longer a thing and you must finish what you started.”

What are you most looking forward to as a new black belt?

“To start being able to help others who are just starting and beginning, and to help those who are still here continue their path to their black belt.”
CONGRATULATIONS, SHERMAN!
